The Hideaway Campground – Finding That Old Florida Camping Experience

When we decided to spend a week camping with some friends of ours at The Hideaway Campground they had booked, we knew we would be in a beautiful part of Florida, but it surpassed our expectations.

This campground is tucked back away from the main roads, so when your GPS turns you onto a dirt road off of a country road, you are in the right place!

At the end of the road, you’ll find a welcoming General Store that is also the office to check in. Behind it is a catch and release fishing pond with an otter that likes to make appearances, along with lots of birds and wildlife.

To your left is the camp host, pool, clubhouse (with a pool table, movies to watch on their TV and comfy seating), a stage for concerts they host, and playground area, and continuing around the pond to your right, past the open field game area, you’ll find the camping. There are a variety of site sizes and types, so be sure to check them out for what is best for you.

We stayed in F1, a 50A pull through, full hook up site with views of the pond from our windows and camp side of our 40 foot 5th wheel. Our friends were in G1, which was the same. They are grass pads, but we had no issues leveling or settling too far into the ground.

There is a bathhouse and a laundry room ($2/wash or dry, takes quarters) centrally located in the camping area.

But the thing we loved the most was the boardwalk and trail along the Suwannee River. We walked out there with our pup a couple of times a day, exploring. There is a fishing dock at the end of the boardwalk.

After dark, you’ll hear owls chatting, and see a sky full of stars, and with fire pits at the sites, there is plenty to enjoy outside!

They offer daily, weekly and monthly rates and, when we visited there was a different price for cash verses a card, but we heard that will be going away as they transition to a new system–be sure to check for that!

There are several state parks and springs in nearby areas, and the town of Chiefland, nearby, has all the shops you will need for supplies. We were able to get over to Manatee Springs State Park and saw wildlife and had an adventure with all the geocaches in the park that we got to share with our friends who were new to the hobby! (check out that blog here)

After a week, we found ourselves wishing we had more time to spend here, so it will be on our list of places to return to!
