Touring the Ben & Jerry’s Factory in Beautiful Vermont

If you are in Vermont and looking for a sweet activity to do, add this to your list!

We are ice cream connoisseurs, so when we realized we were close to the Ben & Jerry’s factory, we jumped at the chance to take the tour!

When you arrive, they have multiple parking lots at different levels, including room for RVs and busses. So if you are passing through, you can still work this into your itinerary!

They have a very welcoming outdoor area with the Flavor Graveyard at the top of the hill, two playgrounds, picnic areas and seating outside the main building. We went on a rainy week day, so many of the outbuildings were closed.

We had the option to book our reservation online, but we didn’t. Luckily it wasn’t a busy day, so we only had to wait an extra half an hour for our tour to start. I do highly recommend booking ahead of time to make sure you get a tour since there is limited space. The tour was very affordable at $8 per person, with discounts for veterans, seniors and kids under 12, so it was under $20 for all 3 of us! You can visit the Ben & Jerry’s Factory website for reservations and more info.

While we waited for our tour to start, we hit up the scoop shop and enjoyed our favorite flavors, and explored the gift shop. I was excited to find they had postcards, but also offered stamps and had a mail drop on site. As an avid postcard sender, that is a rare thing, and a great attention to detail on their part! It was also fun to measure ourselves in pints of ice cream to compare to other adventures measuring height in food products–anything but metric!

The tour allowed for photos in most areas, and they let you know when you can’t use cameras. They do have an elevator, if stairs aren’t your friend. I was also over the moon excited to find out they are allergy friendly and, with samples on the tour, have allergen free options if you let them know. We started with a short movie about their history, sampled some of the fillers for the ice cream, looked out over the factory floor and work in progress from an overlook, and tasted flavors from the tasting lab area. Our tour guide was knowledgeable, friendly and had a great energy, making the experience that much tastier!

It was neat to see the history of the company, both in the tour and with the information they have posted as you explore. Ben & Jerry’s not only have a yummy product, but have built a company that supports the local people, global ideas, and gives back. All while staying true to their original techniques for making their product.

The beauty of this experience is you can spend as little or as much time there as you like, so if you only have an hour to stretch your legs passing through, you can still do this tour, and stay within your budget! Just be aware, you will be consuming a LOT of sugar!

Is your favorite flavor still being produced, or has it been laid to rest in the Flavor Graveyard?
