A Simple Solution From a Full-Time Traveler

I suffer from terrible allergies and asthma, among other health issues. It’s actually one of the reasons we full-time RV–trying to find someplace that doesn’t make my health issues worse, or require more medication just to get through the day.

So when I found out there was something natural I could do to help, I was definitely interested. And both my primary doctor and my homeopathic doctor are on the same page with it and encourage it, which feels like a rarity in modern health care.

The simple option was honey.

Honey is harvested from plants that produce the pollen in an area, so it helps to build an immune system and tolerance to it–much like allergy shots do, but without all the other stuff. It doesn’t turn off my immune sensors, it makes them stronger and better able to resist things.

But, not just any ole’ honey will do, there are some things to make sure it is working to your advantage.

Raw & Unfiltered

You’ll want to find raw and unfiltered honey so that it maintains all the immune boosting stuff. Processing it can take out the benefits and just leave you with the flavor. The good news is that many grocery stores carry a variety so you can find them if there isn’t a local bee keeper or apiary in your area. Just read the labels. Just because it is at a farmstand doesn’t mean it’s not mass-produced, sadly.

Locally Sourced

This is going to be a big one if you are looking to build your immune system up. You’ll need honey from the area you’ll be in. If you’re like us and travel, that will mean having honey from a variety of places. The good news is that properly stored raw, unfiltered honey doesn’t expire, so if you don’t use it all, save it for your next visit, or pass it on to someone if you won’t be returning.

More on Honey

Keep in mind it is a sugar, so using a teaspoon a day is adequate for the benefits, and it’s a good idea to use it in place of something you already sweeten, like tea or cereal, or even a treat if you take it alone. You don’t want to cause more problems! It has also been found to hep with other health issues, including fighting inflammation. If you do have health issues, definitely talk to your doctor and make sure this will help and not hinder you!

Brands

Like I mentioned earlier, a local honey is what you want, and finding a local beekeeper or apiary that sells honey is possible, but since we move often, that’s something I just don’t have the bandwidth for, along with everything else. I try to scope out Harvest Hosts that offer it, but many have been in places we are passing through and not staying. I have found that the Local Hive brand meets my needs–I can find it at Walmart, it’s raw and unfiltered, and has different regions available.

No, I’m not an affiliate or being compensated for recommending them, I just like their product–although I would be willing if they, or another brand with a product that meets my needs asked!

Honey is just one piece of the health puzzle for me, there really are a lot of other things that play into being healthy, like whole foods and regular activity. But when I can swap honey in for other sweets I’d be eating and it has health benefits, I feel like that is something worth sharing.

I’d love to hear what kinds of things you’ve found that help with allergies as you travel. Share in the comments or send us a message!
