GPSMyCity app: Is the Paid Membership Worth It?
*Affiliate post: They reached out to us and offered a free membership for this app in exchange for a review of what we thought.

I won’t make you read the whole blog for the answer–if you travel at all, YES, it’s worth it! Read on to find out why and for a link, and be sure to check out the socials for an upcoming giveaway for a year for FREE for you!
We love tours, but groups aren’t our thing. We often can’t hear or want to spend more/less time at a spot than others. Plus, it can be expensive! Using this app solves all those issues.
GPSMyCity reached out to us last month with a free 3 year membership and we were thrilled. I’d been using the app’s free features to find interesting places when traveling (we’ve mentioned them in 2 prior blogs you can check out for more details: Smartphone Apps we Love and Are Audio Tour Apps on your Travel List), so was excited to use the navigation and narration features that only come with the paid memberships.

With a trip planned in St. Louis, it was a great time to use it. There were several options to choose from, so we previewed them and made a family decision on which one we wanted to see with our one day available.
The turn by turn navigation and history of the locations were awesome, then we ventured in and explored. I honestly never would have walked into the cathedral or the court houses, but we did and were captivated by it all.

It’s one thing to hear about The Missouri Compromise, Dred Scott, and the Civil War, but it’s quite another to be standing in the court house where Dred Scott’s legal battles were fought for 11 years. Walking down smoothed stones and brushing hands along worn mahogany handrails touched by people who made history was humbling, and really brought history to life for our teenager to walk into these historical buildings.
I love that all you need to do is open the app and it will offer you locations to explore based on distance from you. And, if you find other points of interest, you can add them and add your own photos to the app. If you have your own selection of spots you want to check off, it’s super easy to create your own walking tour on their website, as well.

To recap,
Likes: easy to use, great navigation, can reorganize or add in parking or starting spot, narration has great info about the location, gives address and hours, as well as if it is free or pay to play. Love that you earn the badge of “mayor” if you are the first to complete a tour!
Room for Improvement: the navigation and narration audios overlap–would like to see the navigation queue the narration upon arrival to the site; have to manually check being there–would like to see that auto check-in when you arrive and start or complete the narration.

If you travel often and enjoy self-guided tours, this app is definitely for you! Download the app and/or set up your profile on their website GPSMyCity linked here. You can use many features for free or upgrade features for less than the cost of one guided tour somewhere (even the top one is under $20 at the time of this blog!)
A huge thank you to GPSMyCity for the membership and for memberships to share with others!
Also, we want to send some love to the people of St. Louis. This was our second time in the city and everyone is just so friendly and kind, and not just the people working. People on the street would just stop to chat with us and interact about things to see, places they love, or our experience in their town, something we don’t often experience in big cities. As full-time travelers, that isn’t the norm, so thank you, St. Louis, for your hospitality!
