Our First Week on the Road – 2026 Travel Season Starts

With all of our at home appointments complete, it was finally time to leave home base in the rearview for the season.

At our son’s request, we stopped in at Salt Springs Recreation Area in the Ocala National Forest for a few nights. We had 2 days of rain and cool weather, but it was nice to slow down a bit and enjoy it. We got out for walks, swimming at the springs, and even a hike as the weather permitted.

Then it was time to head out of Florida.

We were headed to Asheville for a long weekend to catch up with some of Luther’s friends, but broke it into two drive days.

That allowed us a Harvest Hosts overnight at an alpaca farm–something that has also been on all of our lists since we signed up for Harvest Hosts in 2022. It was great to meet the animals, have them grazing around the rig and saying hi, and picking up some alpaca wool gear from their store.

We also got parked in time to watch the Artemis II crew splashdown!

If you are near Savannah, definitely add Herd It Here Farms to your list, whether for a tour or an overnight!

Asheville returned us to the same campground we stayed at on last year’s visit, Bear Creek RV Park. It’s not fancy, but it’s only a few minutes from friends, and from downtown, so it worked out well.

We found a great pizza place and arcade for an afternoon of games to let the boys get some time together. BJ and I hoped for a date to hike Chimney Rock or explore Biltmore, but time nor budget allowed for either.

We also capitalized on the outlet mall nearby to grab some hiking gear. While there we hit the food court and tried Wicked Pie, a new pizza place with GF pizza that was yummy, and met the proprietor, Ryan.

It was a great little stop we plan to make again so the boys can get more time together, and so we can visit both the Biltmore Estate and Chimney Rock State Park.

But now, it’s time to get heading north.

See you next week for that update.
