A Surprise Stay at Utts Fancy Gap Campground

When we left Mount Airy, NC, we had planned to stay with a friend just over the Virginia line for the week. Unfortunately, that plan lasted until first contact–we couldn’t get level on his property! Worse, when we unhitched the RV from the truck, it slide a few inches, even on plates. It gave us a pretty good scare.
After mulling it over during lunch and replacing our racing hearts with calm heads, we realized our plan wasn’t going to work. As it was mid-afternoon and we had over a week before our next reservation, we hit the phones calling nearby locations.

BJ left a message for nearby Utts Campground and we got a call back a few minutes later from Carter, the new proprietor. They weren’t open until the following week and he had just bought the place, but kindly offered us a place to overnight with full hook ups and no cost, even offering to open the bath house and laundry room if we needed it.
After thanking him profusely, we stabilized the rig with jacks and got her hooked back up with little issue. Then we bid our friend farewell and headed down the road a bit.

When we got off I-77, the RV Garmin told us our rig was oversized for Highway 52 (the road to the park), and you will see signs, but pay them no mind–the RV park is before anything you’ll need to worry about! Pulling up the campground’s driveway, we did see 8 degrees on the incline, so be sure your vehicle has the proper power for your rig if you stay here, or rather when you stay here.
You will want this place on your list! Sitting atop a beautiful hill on an old dairy farm, the views are breathtaking. When you arrive, the water and dump station are on your right (available for a fee, even if you aren’t staying at the park), and the office on your left. You are surrounded by woods and a meadow, both available for you to explore. There are both tent and RV sites, and the RV sites are spacious and have full hook ups, a picnic table and fire ring.

They have a playground, bathhouse, laundry room, and gathering areas. There’s a Dollar General just before the campground entrance, should you need some basic supplies. At the time we visited, the dairy barn was available to explore, and you could easily imagine a day on the farm as you take in the old beams and milking stations. Needless to say, BJ snapped a ton of photos with his new camera and shared them as a thank you–so you may see them online!

We spent a relaxing evening chatting with Carter about his ideas, travel and the area surrounding the campground. This spot is a short drive from the Blue Ridge Parkway, hiking trails, and the town of Mount Airy, also known as Mayberry and the home town of Andy Griffith, (check out our blog about our day there Living the Andy Griffith Life.
Be sure to follow Utts Fancy Gap Campground on social media, and check out their website at Utts Campground to make a reservation and experience this amazing place for yourself.
Since our friend lives nearby and we love this beautiful area, a return trip is high on our list. And so we can thank Carter for his kindness and hospitality on a challenging day!
