Next in the California Journey – Yosemite to Sequoia

Leaving Yosemite meant having to drive the New Priest Grade Road again, but downhill and in the cool of the morning wasn’t as bad, especially since we new what to expect this time! With that part of our journey completed early, we had a fairly easy travel day.

Our next goal was to visit Sequoia National Park and, if time allowed, Kings Canyon National Park above it (you have to go through Sequoia to access it from the west). Our 39 foot 5th wheel was too big to camp inside Sequoia, and as we researched the park and the area, we were fine with that. More switchbacks were in our future!

We had also been watching the freezing temps and snowfall in the area for several days, so decided lower elevation would be our goal. We tried scoping out some RV parks in Three Rivers, but between full parks, no response from others, and not fitting in many of the dispersed camping sites, we opted for Lemon Cove Village RV Park, about 30 minutes from the park entrance and much milder temps. And, lucky for us, they had availability for big rigs and full hook ups.

Arrival and check in were easy, as was setting up in the pull through site. We scheduled to stay over the weekend to get some down time and catch up on chores, along with our park visit, so we were happy to see they offered a dog wash station–Luna was not as excited as we were, though.

We met some great people at the park and enjoyed exploring the area. The surrounding mountains were beautiful! The first night there, BJ heard coyote howling in the distance, but it didn’t seem to phase Luna and we never saw them, just tons of ground squirrels and chipmunks!

Unfortunately, we realized that weather and time were not on our side, so we scrapped several places off our wish list on this trip. Be sure to follow along for our next blog about recreating childhood memories in Sequoia National Park and what else we did, and didn’t, get to do while here!
