Vermont – RVing, Trekkies, Waterfalls and Ice Cream

When a chance to spend a week in Vermont came up, we jumped at it. We had driven through the state in 2016 on our tent camping adventure to Canada and had dreamed of returning to spend time there. We packed a lot into our week there, and had a pretty great home base to travel from. Check out the info on where we stayed, or skip to the bottom half to check out all the places we explored!

We checked in our membership campgrounds first, but none were close enough to where we needed to be, so we explored other options and found the Lake Bomoseen KOA Holiday in Vermont, linked here was in the right area and had availability, since it was going to be over the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

We were easily able to make reservations online, but, for holidays, they do require a payment in full. After a quick call to the campground to confirm, we just booked two reservations (just in case the job fell through, we didn’t want to be out the full amount). We also checked with them about getting packages and mail since we would need some supplies for the job and our own maintenance.

Checking in here was a breeze, the office and camp store are right at the front gate and everyone was nice and friendly. There is a gate key that requires a refundable $10 cash deposit, so be sure to bring that with you, and return your key when you leave!

We ended up with two different sites (116 & 118) the way it worked out with our arrival and departure dates, but since the larger sites with clear sky lines for our Starlink meant only water and 50A electric hook ups, we would need a dump day midweek anyway. It also meant we’d be using the bathhouse for showers, which were only a couple minutes walk from our loop.

We were there in May, so had cool weather, with clouds and rain part of the week, which was a nice break from the dreadful heat of Florida we are used to this time of year. All the amenities are in the same central area, except the dog park, on the back section of the park. The pool wasn’t open yet, but as cold as it was, we didn’t mind!

We had hopes to get out into the lake with our paddle boards since they have a boat dock, but with work and the cold and rainy weather, we weren’t able to make that happen. They did have tent camping and cabins around the property, as well. We stayed in a KOA cabin in 2016 when dodging a heatwave, and they are pretty basic with beds, AC/heat, and a nice porch, so you can bring your camping supplies without a tent or RV!

We enjoyed getting to explore the area, and there is a lot to see–way more than we managed to fit into our itinerary!

We went for a walk when we first arrived and chatted with a couple of locals spending the weekend here. They told us there was a lot of history, hiking and waterfalls to see. They asked if we were Star Trek fans, and when we said yes, they suggested we visit the nearby Star Trek Original Series Set Tour in Ticonderoga, a reproduction of the original set that you can tour. We did that on our first full day. Check out the blog link for more on that experience and where to find it if you are planning a trip.

We also explored the town of Ticonderoga while there. It was a Sunday and downtown was closed, but we explored bicentennial park, the river and waterfall, and learned about the history of the mills along the river. We also stumbled across the giant pencil statue as a nod to when these fabulous pencils were made here (one of the mills was a graphite mill along the river). I loved their pencils when I was in the classroom, so it was a bit of nostalgia and entertainment to stand next to artwork of giant pencils.

Even though it rained most of our week in Vermont, we did get a day where it was only a drizzle on and off, so we hopped at the chance to go exploring trails and waterfalls, especially after a week of rain.

Our first stop was Thundering Falls Trail, a short boardwalk hike to an overlook of the falls. There were also some paths to higher levels of the falls, and Appalachian Trails access points at this location. The falls were beautiful and even Luna enjoyed exploring.

Next we loaded up and headed to see the Clarendon Gorge Suspension Bridge that is on the Airport Lookout via Long Trail. It was a short walk to the suspension bridge and amazing views of the gorge. We explored the area along the river and around the rocks, climbing and playing. This is also an Appalachian Trail access point.

Both of these locations we found just looking for hikes on Google Maps, and they also have info on the AllTrails app. Both were also pet friendly trails, only requiring them to be leashed and you pick up after your pet. Neither had toilets or water stations, only parking areas, but were great for a picnic. They are also several Appalachian Trail access points in the area, so if you are looking for a short hike, or access to the trail, these are easy to find.

One of our tastiest outings was the Ben & Jerry’s Factory Tour (full blog linked here). This half hour tour took us behind the scenes of the factory on a guided tour to see the process for ice cream, learn a little bit more about the founders, and sample some of the treats. There is also plenty to explore self-guided and free on the grounds, if the tour isn’t in your budget, and there is RV parking on site! Check out the full blog for more details!

While we did a lot in our short time in Vermont, we know there is so much more to see and explore! We hope our next visit will be in better weather conditions!
