Touring the Star Trek Original Set…in New York!

When we arrived at our campground in Vermont, we met some locals and they told us about the Star Trek Original Set Tour in Ticonderoga, NY, a short drive away from us. The owners are fans that found the original set blue prints and recreated it for fellow fans to visit.

They have a great display of various costumes, props and memorabilia, as well as merch to take home with you–yes, you can get your red, blue or gold shirt and join the crew, if you don’t already have one!

It was fascinating to hear about Lucille Ball, and Desilu Studios, investment to make this show happen–and the incredible cost that went into both the pilots (yes, two!) and each episode.

In this recreated set, you feel like you are onboard the ship and have time hopped back to the nostalgic era of 1960’s Sci-Fi walking around and hearing stories of how they created the various sets and costumes. No detail was too small, and, thanks to modern technology, we get to hear the red alert on set, instead of it being added in editing, like the cast experienced!

While filming isn’t allowed on property, photos are!  The guides have a vast amount of knowledge and reference many of the episodes that take place in each scene, as well as insights and details of things that happened through the seasons, behind the scenes and to make filming possible.

They are even great about taking photos of you and your group reenacting various poses from your favorite episodes!

While Lou isn’t really a fan, BJ has had us watching many episodes over the years, and I am nostalgic from my Spock crush as a child–something  I found out I was not alone in! , BJ and I had a blast walking the halls, acting out scenes and asking questions of our guide.

Now, not only do fans visit, but they host events throughout the year for fans to gather, and original cast members even host tours and events, including William Shatner who will be visiting in June.

Are you a Trekkie, or just a casual fan? Which scenes will you be recreating on your visit, or will you plan a trip when William Shatner or one of the other cast members are visiting?

The basic tour starts at $24 a person and is about 60-90 minutes long, depending on group size, and is led by knowledgeable fans, often referencing episodes as you visit each section of the USS Enterprise. When cast members are visiting, they will lead tours, as well. Some live close enough they are here often throughout the year. There are other tour options and events to check out, as well.

They have a small parking lot, or you can find street parking since it is in the downtown area, close to shops and cafe’s, if you are looking to make a day, or afternoon, of it.
