Thousand Trails Bear Cave – Campground Review

This was another campground we stumbled across with a handful of days to fill between reservations, and it was one of our favorites to visit while in the area. It is right along the Michigan-Indiana border, not far from Elkhart and Goshen–home of many of the RV factories, and were we were heading for a tour ourselves.

This is an older campground, so not all spots have full hookups, and some of the loops will not accommodate a large rig, so be sure to walk the area and check before driving. That being said, we would still recommend spending time here! There are sites that accommodate larger rigs, and we found a great spot with water and electric next to the playground, which our son loved! The dump station was easy to access on our way out, as well.

The folks were friendly and the check in process was easy. It has that old summer camp campground feel to it, and being along a river and situated at a real cave was amazing. Due to flooding in the area, we weren’t able to do a cave tour while they work on it, but the property is beautiful.

This has all the basic amenities you’d expect–game room, pool, laundry room, clubhouse, dump station, playground and a small camp store–we loved that it was right on the river and has a boat launch and canoes to rent.

Since we had paddleboards, we enjoyed a day paddling the river, and so did Luna since she just jumped in a few times!

The trails around the property are sloped, so there are many stairs and paths. It made for enjoyable walks exploring with our son and the pup.

We are watching for when the caves will be open for tours again so we can plan another trip up, but we would return for a visit in the area even if it wasn’t open yet.
