How we save on Fuel using Open Roads App

Bulk Fuel purchasing for the RVer. (This is not a paid promotion, just something we use and love. We do have a referral link at the bottom though.)

We were introduced to TDR’s Open Roads Fuel program early 2024. We were hesitant to start using them until we got a bit more research into what the program is.

Most large companies purchase fuel at a large volume using certain fuel companies. So many times the cost you see on the marque is not what the trucking company is paying there. The Open Roads fuel program is how we as RVers can utilize the lower cost.

The program is only for diesel fuel, and not yet for gas. They do require some personal information for payment though. So you will need to link a bank account to your open roads account. They will ask for your social security number also.

Using the card, we pull into the truck lane. Swipe our Open Roads card at the pump. Follow a few prompts, and the pump turns on. Open Roads will direct debit the cost of the fuel from your linked account. They do charge a small transaction fee. But when you look at the amount of fuel you purchase, the savings are major.

Here are some of the amounts we have saved this year:

50 Transactions
Pump price: $3973.29
Paid Price: $3562.16
Amount SAVED: $411.16
Average Savings: $8.22/per transaction

Not only are we getting savings, but we can now pay at the pump in the truck lanes at truck stops. Not having to navigate the car side islands in small parking lots is another large added bonus. We have also noticed the professional drivers are less stressed, and just better to be around when you have a larger vehicle.

We normally use this in conjunction with the Gas Buddy app to make sure we are finding reasonable prices on fuel.

If you are RVing with a diesel vehicle, you should look into this program!

After you are approved, then you’ll get the cool green card fairly quick (with an option to expedite if needed.)
