A Playful Afternoon at the Wildlife Refuge
On a return trip to Thousand Trails Peace River, we visited the Hardee County Wildlife Refuge, on Highway 17 in Zolfo Springs. We had visited several years ago, but it has been closed our last two trips after hurricane damage.

Located on the backside of the Pioneer Park area and campground, it’s a beautiful boardwalk stroll to see the animals, many rescues, as you stroll along the river and under the tree canopy.

We went on a cool winter afternoon and were treated to animals that were curious and playful, including foxes, an otter, cougars, bears, deer, tortoises, and a super chatty owl.

Admission is only about $5 per person, and it takes about an hour, or less, depending on how long you take to watch the animals. Luna stayed at the RV since it wasn’t pet friendly, but she didn’t mind and seemed well rested when we returned.

We then made our way up the road to Wauchula to get some ice cream at the local shop, La Michoacana Ice Cream, right next to the Wal-mart, and had lots of options to choose from before deciding on our treats.
It made for a nice afternoon with the family, and we got to support some local places, which we love to do.
