Spending A Pet Friendly Day in Amish Country

On a recent visit to Pennsylvania, we decided to spend the day in Amish Country, specifically in Lancaster. We had stopped here in 2016, when Luther was 5, while exploring the east coast on a tent camping trip to Canada. Since he had no memory of the visit, it was time for a repeat.

The Amish Farm and House we had visited was still around, so we stopped in again. It was around $13 a person for the tour and to explore the farm (and surprisingly offered a Veteran/Military discount), but it was pet friendly, so Luna was able to enjoy without the typical hand off we have to do.

We explored the farm, seeing all the animals (and their reaction to the curious Luna), sampling food, and comparing the real ways of life to what Luther knew from Weird Al’s famous parody song, Amish Paradise. We made a bingo card of the lyrics, giving him an incentive for paying attention to the details and working with him on asking questions to things that weren’t easy to find by walking around. On our tour of the house, we lucked into it being just us (a school group showed up just after us), so we got a lot of good information and he was able to ask a lot of questions. He did a pretty good job and found everything on the list!

We were so tempted by the delicious smells of the BBQ they were cooking out back, but weren’t hungry enough at that time so passed on it, sadly, opting instead for a local farm stand to restock our fresh inventory.

We found Lapp’s Farm Market a short drive away and were blessed with delicious options and good prices. We got a huge head of lettuce, some cheese, pickles, cucumbers and a sweet potato (the popcorn was from the Amish Farm and House). We had hoped to grab a milkshake, but they were awaiting another batch of milk, so we missed out.

If either of these experiences are on your list when passing through Lancaster County, we highly recommend them both! Here’s their info and websites (reservations are a good idea during weekends and peak holidays):

Amish Farm and House 2395 Covered Bridge Drive, Lancaster, PA 17602, US 717-394-6185

Lapp’s Farm Market 1406 Lampeter Road Lancaster, PA 17602
