Travels from the Wild West to the Land of Dinosaurs

After our visit to Tombstone, it was time to continue our eastbound trek. We had originally planned to do the I-10 stretch–visit Big Bend National Park, see friends in San Antonio and camp on the beach near Galveston. Unfortunately, with the government shutdown, operating hours in Big Bend were still on summer hours, so wouldn’t fit with our midweek visit, so we decided to change plans and cross northern Texas along I-20, allowing us a return trip to Dinosaur Valley State Park, and squeezing in some other stops along that route. If we have learned nothing else in RV life, it’s to always be ready to pivot!
With a reservation secured at Dinosaur Valley RV Park (more on them in a future blog), we split the nearly 900 mile journey into 2 travel days and found a couple of great Harvest Hosts locations to stay at.
Our first night, we stopped in Las Cruces, New Mexico at the Rio Grande Winery. With a mountain backdrop, desert landscape and a vineyard surrounding us, it was a great stop. They have a food menu with great options, which was nice after a travel day, and since it was Saturday night, we were also treated to a live band. Relaxing on their patio to eclectic music on a cool, fall night in the desert was just what we needed and, even with several fellow RVers, we slept well.

The next day, we covered the stretch from Las Cruces to Midland, Texas, arriving just after the Permian Basin Petroleum Museum, our next Harvest Hosts location, closed for the evening. We settled in for a quiet evening with plans to explore the museum when they opened the next day before getting on the road for our final travel day. The museum turned out to be a fascinating stop, so more details on that in the next blog!

Our final day, we drove from Midland to Glen Rose, Texas and settled into the RV Park. With the time change and shorter days, we arrived after dark, but luckily it was a pull-through spot and an easy set up.
We had a week long stay and plans to play in the state park next door, explore the farm and area around the campground, a forecast for northern lights (and this is Dark Sky area!) and visit Capernaum Studios (the filming location for Season 1 of The Chosen series), and it was amazing. Be sure you are following along on social media or subscribed to the blog for more on those in future blogs!
